Celebrate the 2024 Certified Sustainable Wines of Ontario
As the fall equinox marks the shift to cooler days and the start of the 2024 harvest, Ontario’s vineyards are bustling with activity. This special time in the growing season is when our grapes reach their peak ripeness and they are ready to be transformed into the celebrated Ontario wines we all enjoy. This is also when we welcome and congratulate the newly certified sustainable vineyards and producers of certified wine into the sustainability program.

Ontario Craft Wineries and Grape Growers of Ontario launch new certification program
For Ontario’s wine industry, sustainability is a journey, not a destination. “While I think people traditionally view sustainability in terms of environment and community, which is great,” said Andrea Kaiser, chair for the Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario (SWO) Certified Program, “more people have started to understand that sustainability is a three-pronged approach which also includes profitability and local economy.”

How sustainable is your wine?
Andrea Kaiser knows wine country. Her father, Karl K. Kaiser, was one of the founding winemakers of the Niagara-on-the-Lake region, and now she’s the director of marketing at Reif Estate Winery.
Much has stayed the same about the community since Kaiser was a kid. The goal was and still is to “grow premium grapes in order to make premium wines,” she says. But now, there’s one key difference: companies are laser-focused on sustainability.

The governing concepts behind organic and biodynamic approaches to winemaking are easily relatable for wine lovers; the fact that organic farming means working without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals, for starters, is easy to appreciate.
